With a mix of Scottish and African ancestry, the Grenadine Island of Carriacou, located north-east of the mainland, offers a glimpse into the mixed ancestry of its population with its wealth of historical attractions and cultural festivals.
Known as the land of reefs, Carriacou is the largest of Grenada´s sister islands, even through it is a mere 33 sq km (13 sq mi). Despite its size, Carriacou is filled with activities to satisfy your thirst for adventure, or to fill your day with the relaxing rhythms of local flavor. Dive into the crystal clear waters and take advantage of the world-class snorkeling and diving on some of the Caribbean most pristine reefs, or enjoy a day simply lounging on the stunning beaches of Anse La Roche, Paradise Beach or Sandy Island.
ACTIVITIES
With a restaurant or bar on every corner, you are sure to satisfy your appetite as well-be sure to sample the local Maroon food of rolled rice and corn with stewed meats and peas cooked over and open wood fire.
Stop in t he the town of Hillsborough, the bustling heart if the island and wander around the shops or take a stroll through the botanical gardens. Visit the museum and see internationally known works of self-taught artist, Canute Callisted, or watch the traditional boat building passed down by the Scottish settlers in the village of Windward.
The annual Carriacou Regatta held in July and August seeks to rekindle the art of traditional boat making, so in this time of the year could be an excellent moment to visit this amazing island.
