Barbuda is one part of a three-island state with Antigua and Redonda, located in the north-eastern Caribbean. An unspoiled paradise of seemingly endless stretches of white and pink sandy beaches, Barbuda is surrounded by the deep blue Atlantic Ocean on one side, with its driftwood and sea-shell strewn wild beaches, and the calm clear waters of the Caribbean on the other. Undeveloped except for small number of boutique resorts, Barbuda is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with plenty opportunities to see turtles and tropical fish as well as some interesting shipwrecks that lie undisturbed in the turquoise water.
A short trip from the nearby island of Antigua, Barbuda was first settled by British and French, unsuccessfully until 1680 when Christopher Codrington began cultivating sugar on the island after establishing a British colony large enough to survive the ravages of nature and the local Carib population.
Barbuda is largely rocky and flat, with much of the island covered in bush. It is home to a variety of wildlife including deer and boar, land turtles and guinea fowl as well as the occasional wild cat. Feral cattle, horses and donkeys wander about and sheep and goats roam freely in the village, returning to their pens at night. There are many caves to explore, and in some of them there are ancient drawings.
